Our Founder: Erin L. Thomas, PhD

I'm a social psychologist who's spent the past 15 years as a talent strategist and experience designer. I marry the art of gathering with the science of groups and teams to help companies make the most of their human moments.

As workplaces enhance remote and hybrid operating models, intentionally integrate gatherings into their operating cadences, and increasingly automate non-human skills, deepening human connection and human x AI collaboration is more essential than ever. I founded Shoulder2Shoulder to meet the needs of this era of work, in which distinctly human experiences and skills are a premium. Our clients are companies who know that human relationships and capabilities are anything but soft.

Prior to Shoulder2Shoulder, I was a VP at Upwork, responsible for culture transformation, people analytics, team member listening, leader engagement and DEI. Prior to Upwork, I was a Managing Director at Paradigm and led DEI at Grant Thornton LLP and Argonne National Laboratory.

I earned a PhD in social psychology from Yale University and leverage that training to use data to strengthen workplace relationships and dynamics. In 2020, I was named to Fortune’s 40 under 40 list as one of the most influential people in technology. My work has been featured in The New York Times, Harvard Business Review, Fast Company and BBC, as well as recognized by Forbes, Human Rights Campaign and the National Association for Female Executives.
